With highly fragrant blossoms and brightly coloured small, oval-shaped fruits which can be eaten straight from the branch (including the skin), the Citrus kumquat `Nagami` (or dwarf citrus) is a delightful bush plant or small tree, that would make a beautiful addition to your patio.
Believed to be native to China, kumquat fruits ripen from October to January and are the only members of the citrus family, where the peel is the sweetest part! Kumquat fruits are small, with the Nagami variety being only approximately 1`` in diameter and 2-3`` long. The fruits have a slightly sour flavour, but if eaten with the skin, provides a unique and delicious taste. The only part of the kumquat fruit that should not be consumed is the seeds, which are green in colour, and similar to that of an orange.
Kumquats are also beautiful fruits for making into jams and jellies! Perfect in patio pots during the summer months, although ideally citrus plants require indoor winter protection.
